Wolverton Park named Best Large
Development
Back

Following hot on the heels of being officially voted the best
mixed use development in the country, winning Gold at the What
House? Awards, Wolverton Park has scooped ‘Best New Large
Development’ at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards.
Wolverton was the world’s first railway town and sprang up in the
1840s to service the steam locomotives making their way north from
London. At that time, engines could only travel around 50 miles
before needing water, fuel and servicing.
Three Grade II listed buildings form the heart of the new scheme –
the former Royal Train Shed, the Triangular Building where
locomotives and carriages were built, and a Reading Room which was
an educational facility for the works’ employees.
The site, steeped in railway history, has been redeveloped by
Places for People to provide 300 new homes alongside shops,
offices, restaurant and a bar. The site also boasts a two and a
half acre park, eco-pond, and canal frontage.
The Grade II listed buildings at Wolverton Park have been carefully
restored retaining the town’s link to its industrial
heritage.
David Cowans, Chief Executive of Places for People said: "We are
thrilled to have won this award for our Wolverton Park development
and to be recognised in the sector as a leading player in
developing and delivering a successful mixed use community.
“Developing a site that has such historical and emotive
significance was both extremely complex and challenging. We needed
to design and construct a range of homes suitable for 21st century
living, but which were sympathetic to, and preserved the history
and heritage of the former railway works site.
“We are really proud of the result – a new community alongside
shops, restaurants, green space, and employment facilities. These
are principles we are replicating on large scale at sites across
the country, in order to create and manage places where people want
to live, work, and achieve their potential."
