Places for People supports Haiti fundraising effort

Places for People employees have raised more than £10,000, as part of their Haiti appeal – money which will help thousands of people rebuild their lives and homes, following a major earthquake in January.

Employees from across the Group raised £5,000, a figure which was then matched by Places for People.

The money is being donated to Habitat for Humanity - an organisation committed to the long term recovery of Haiti. The charity provided an immediate response to the disaster by sending a Disaster Risk Assessment Team to gain a clear picture of the situation, and followed this up with a cash-for-work programme, shelter kits and transitional shelters.

Now it’s looking at the long-term solutions to the destruction and chaos that surrounds the people of Haiti - aiding community recovery and ensuring that housing and infrastructure is rebuilt. Habitat for Humanity is mobilizing teams of local people to clear the way for shelter construction and home rehabilitation. It will also be supporting recovery by distributing Core Homes, which provide basic homes with permanent materials that can be extended into full homes later on.

Ian Walkden, National Director for Habitat for Humanity GB, said: "On behalf of Habitat for Humanity, I would like to thank Places for People, those involved in fundraising activity, and everyone who made a donation. We are extremely grateful to all of them for their tremendous support.

"Habitat for Humanity aims to help 50,000 earthquake affected families in Haiti over the next five years. The generous contribution from Places for People will go directly to that programme, and will help make a real difference to people."

Chris Kilbane, Individual Support Director at Places for People said:

"Many of our employees watched the most awful scenes from Haiti, following the earthquake, and felt compelled to help with the recovery effort, and raise money for those affected.

"It was natural that we should support Habitat for Humanity who specialise in shelter provision, housing repair and reconstruction. Their efforts show the real difference that we can make through contributions and fundraising across the country. We are priviledged to help Habitat for Humanity deliver much needed new housing, and services to people who were made homeless as a result of the disaster."
